Read the latest announcements about our project:
Saturday 20th of September 2003 we took her out at the Anker ship yard in Kappeln / Schlei.
Sunday 31st of August 2003 Kaskalot was chopped by a rain gust of 8 Bft. No one was hurt, but the season is over.
Above: Just minutes after the disaster
This was a real surprise: A rain gust of 8 Bft hit us and the mast broke about 3 m above the deck. I was sitting on the middle hull to operate the traveler and main sheet, while Chris and two other crew members where sitting on the windward hull. We had about 3 - 4 Bft and we where sailing with around 10 knots at about 70 degrees to the wind direction when the squall hit us. The boat accelerated to more than 16 knots and I thought that we will have new record today. Than the wind got stronger and it was later reported from a boat near us, that this was 8 Bft. Suddenly the mast bended very quickly to an “S”, top section windward and bottom section leeward and broke before I could release the main sheet. The broken top section smashed into the leeward hull and damaged it. Also the mast heel broke out of the deck.
Saturday 16th of August 2003 we had 5 - 6 Bft westerly wind. We will try the main sail with more winds and waves. On westerly winds the waves roll into the bay and the height of the waves were about 3 - 4 ft. Maximum speed we could reach was 16,8 knots not only because of the waves but still the main sail is not good enough for this conditions.

First we lost the top batten which you can see on the picture below. The battens are just too small and they can get lost. Now we will have some battens who will be tensioned and hold by a bolt and nut fixture.

Weekend 9th - 10th of August 2003 we are mounting the new battens and the main sail is much better. The new battens have a different profile and they are stiffer.. We have nice winds and sail with friends. The whether is still very hot and the sea is warm - 22 Celsius. A friend makes the first pictures with sails up. Unfortunately we were to far away so they are only thumbs. But you can see the 7/8 rigging and the square top main.

Weekend 2nd & 3rd of August 2003 was nice summer weather but no wind. The bracket for the outboarder was strengthened an welded. May be I will make a new constriction during the winter time. We had friends visiting us and we have used the boat as bathing platform. At 0-2 Bft and 400 kg of human beefing on board no records were expected.
Wednesday 30th of July 2003 was not a good day. Not only that this is my last day of summer vacation, but the outboarder bracket broke just when we where in the middle of the harbour. I was lucky to had one hand on the outboarder, otherwise it would be now on the ground of the Baltic sea. Then I had to jump into the water in order to prevent Kaskelot to go on the rocks of the habour. We had very good winds from east - which is perfect with no waves - but sailing is postponed until the bracket is welded.
Tuesday 29th of July 2003 is calm weather and we use it to mount the genacker boom and to clean the port hull underneath. We sailed under motor to the beach of Wackerballig. After we had a drink we tried the new Genacker which is a star cut in the colors of Schleswig-Holstein. With 0-1 Bft no main and jib we acceded 4,3 knots.

Saturday 26th of July 2003 in the afternoon we have about 4 Bft and we go sailing. Still the main is not good, we think we need to get more power on the battens in the main and stiffer battens to solve the problems. We do reach 21,00 knots speed - so far the best we had. A nice day and everything is going smoother know. The new genacker of 60 sqm was delivered. We are very excited to put the genacker boom up and to test it. The jib is still to long and the sail maker decides to make a new one after the summer. He also ordered stiffer and longer batten for the main sail.
Saturday 22nd of July 2003 have about 3-4 Bft. later 4-5 Bft. with old sea swell. We perform to 15,8 knots of speed and we are quite happy to reach such a speed for the first time. Before the fastest was 11,3 knots. It was a new feeling for us.
Weekend 21st - 22nd of June 2003 the new sails are tested for the first time. We are rather disappointed. The jib is to long and has to be shortened. The main seems to have a problem with the batten.
Weekend and Holiday 7th - 9th of June 2003 the new mast was finished and hoisted at 7 to 8 Bft with no problem.
Saturday 31st of June 2003 we take down the mast to start to build a new one.
Holiday and weekend 1st - 4th of May 2003 we build her up at the launching site in Schleswig at the “Schleswiger-Segel-Club (SSC)” the first day. 2nd May we launched her and sailed to Lindauhof, on the 3rd to Kappeln and on the 4th to her home port “Gelting Mole”.
Easter weekend 18th - 21st and weekend 25th & 26th of April 2003 we cleaned, polished, repaired, equipped and understand “Renegade” and made her fit for launching after four and a half years on the trailer.
Thursday 17th of April 2003 “Renegade” arrived in Wippendorf on a truck.
Weekend 12th & 13th of April 2003 in the UK and bought “Renegade” as seen in “Emsworth Marina”.
Monday 7th of April 2003 had the first contact with “cat sale”.
Sunday 6th of April 2003 saw the add of “Renegade” from “cat sale” in a boating magazine.
